Aluminum Road Bikes
Aluminum is one of the most common tube materials in bike frame building. It's plentiful, recyclable, does not rust or corrode like steel, and has a high strength to weight ratio when compared to titanium and steel. Aluminum weighs less than a third as much as steel and is just as strong.
Aluminum tubes can be thinner than steel of the same strength, which makes them lighter, while maintaining the same amount of rigidity. To maintain the structural integrity, aluminum tubes are generally oversized. The more expensive aluminum alloys, such as Easton's Scandium tubes, are believed to have the best of both worlds, the corrosion resistance and lightweight of aluminum and the liveliness of steel.
Generally speaking however, aluminum bike frames can't be repaired as aluminum tends to shear upon breakage and thus can't be re-welded. Something to consider, but with normal use, maintenance, and careful riding, an aluminum bike frame can last you a lifetime.
